This note is for Windows 7. It applies to any emacs version.

When working with emacs my display suddenly switched from landscape to portrait mode. What happened? When working with emacs I meant to press Alt-x or Control-x. Instead I pressed the key combination Windows-x. While completing the emacs command I pressed another key that caused my screen settings to go from landscape to portrait.

When you have this problem fix it by pressing Windows-x again and then selecting the right option in the new configuration window.
